5/2/2023 0 Comments Plate n sheet 4 2013 crack![]() Fiber metal laminates (FMLs) are a new type of laminated composites, consisting of thin metal layers (0.2–0.5 mm) and thin polymeric composite layers reinforced with glass, carbon, or Kevlar fibers (0.2–0.3 mm), as shown in Figure 1. In these papers, the metal or composite patches are stuck on a single or on both faces of the cracked structural components. Crack growth behavior of engineering components has been studied by many researchers. They are also easy to fabricate and join. ![]() Some of the advantages of composite materials that make them ideal reinforcements for structural repairs are high specific modulus, high strength, light weight, excellent formability, and corrosion resistance. Alen Baker was the pioneer researcher who studied bonded composite repair at the aeronautical and maritime research laboratory for the Royal Australian Air Force in the early 1970s. Recently, composite patches have been used in structure repair processes to increase the service life of cracked components.
